5 Tips
to prepare your child for learning how to read
Read and sing everyday together!
Create loving, fun memories reading and singing to your child! *And remember they do not have to sit still! They are still learning from you even when they are walking around while you read or sing.
#1
Letters are everywhere!
Point out print you see all around you! Start making that connection to them that letters/words have meaning! “Look the Target sign... we are at Target to go shopping.” If your child is starting to learn letters you can say “Look- Target has a T. What other letters do you see?”
#2
Name everything!
Build their vocabulary with the world around them. Name everything you see and do! And ask questions about it- do you see that table? It has 4 legs. Why do you think they are called legs? *Encourage curiosity even with the simplest things around you!
#3
Build their confidence.
Put down the book or activity when your child is no longer interested and come back to it later. Use excitement and natural curiosity when learning new things. Help them grow their confidence by listening to their cues and emotions when exploring new activities! This is their FIRST time learning these things, we want to create a strong and loving foundation.
#4
Create experiences.
Read about something and then go experience it! If you read a book about going to beach- go to the beach! Make connections to reading to real life experiences. You can incorporate all the skills above too! Sing songs on the way there, point out signs you see and name all the cool things you see together at that place!
Children learn through discovery!
